Background and Importance
The Mekong–Lancang Cooperation (MLC) is a sub-regional cooperation framework officially launched in 2016. It brings together six countries that share the Mekong River: China (where it is known as the Lancang River), Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Vietnam.
The MLC was established to promote inclusive and sustainable development in the Mekong subregion—one of the world’s most dynamic and diverse areas, rich in natural resources, culture, and economic potential. It aims to build trust, promote shared prosperity, and address common challenges across borders.
Key Objectives of the MLC
Promote Sustainable Development
through effective and balanced use of shared resources such as water, land, and energy.
Strengthen Infrastructure and Connectivity
including transportation, energy, and digital systems to facilitate trade and people-to-people exchange.
Enhance Water Resource Management
to ensure water sustainability, reduce disaster risks, and secure regional water security.
Foster Cooperation in Health, Environment, Agriculture, and Innovation
through knowledge exchange, joint programs, and cross-border collaboration.
Thailand’s Role in the MLC
As a founding member, Thailand plays an active leadership role in shaping policy direction, organizing regional initiatives, and hosting strategic events under the MLC framework. The country emphasizes “shared benefits and mutual growth,” driven by the principles of sustainability and regional solidarity.
Thailand’s approach encourages participation from all sectors—including government, business, academia, and civil society—making MLC efforts more inclusive and impactful.
